Auditions for the 2012 amateur Open Mic Jazz Singing Competition at GrandWest opens on Wednesday 15 August and runs through to 3 October at Jackson Hall. Would-be songbirds need to present themselves at Jackson Hall on audition nights, and the competition is closed to anyone under the age of 18 and professional singers.
The quarter finals for the top 24 entrants will be held on Wednesday the 10 October and 17 October, followed by the semi finals for the top 12 entrants on Wednesday, 24 October.
The final top six entrants will do battle for the top spot on Wednesday, 31 October. Contestants will get to perform two songs each on the night.
The winner of the contest will receive R25 000 in cash plus a Shure Sm58 microphone from Wild & Marr, a demo recording session at Nuthouse Studios, a corporate identity and business card design package from iCandy Design, a portfolio shoot from Flash of Madness and an invitation from espAFRIKA to perform at their Cape Town International Jazz Festival free Community Concert which takes place on Green Market Square.
The second placed entrant will receive R7 500 cash and a two-night stay for two at the Table Bay Hotel complete with complimentary bed and breakfast valued at R12 500 plus Shure SRH440 headphones from Wild & Mar. The third placed will receive R5 000 cash plus a one-night mid- week stay for two at the Golden Valley Casino in Worcester including dinner plus Shure SE215 in-ear phones from Wild & Marr. Both runners up will each win Shure headphones.
Entrants will be required to choose the song they intend performing from a selection of well known classics such as Moon River, Fever, Route 66, The way you look tonight, Crazy and Making Whoopie. This year the repertoire has been expanded to include some African Jazz favourites such as The Click Song, Ntylo Ntylo and Pata Pata.
To assist the entrants with their audition, they will be accompanied by accomplished musicians Andrew Ford playing a baby grand piano, Wesley Rustin on double bass and Ivan Bell on drums.
The three judges will focus on vocal technique, song interpretation, stage presence and audience response so friends, family and fans are encouraged to cheer and support their favourite entrants. This year, the judges will be popular personalities Bev Scott-Brown (Spotlight Music), Clarence Ford (Heart 104.9) and Neil Potgieter (McStanley).
Last year’s winner Spha Mdlalose, as well as the five finalists from 2011, will be invited to perform throughout the competition rounds.

- The Jackson Hall band will provide the accompaniment music for the song/s chosen
- 24 Quarter Finalists will be announced at Jackson Hall on Wed 3 October at the end of Audition 8.
- 12 Semi-Finalists will be announced at Jackson Hall on Wed 17 October at the end of Quarter Final 2.
- 6 Finalists will be announced at Jackson Hall on Wed 24 October at the end of the Semi Final round.
- Judges decisions are final
- Entrants must be 18 years or older
- Entrants must provide proof of ID
- Entrants may only enter once
- Entrants must be present for all competition requirements
- No communication will be entered into with the judges, either written or verbal
