Converse Partners With The Royal Fam Kings

Converse has become synonymous with unearthing musical creative talent across the globe and creating experiences for young people to express themselves.  It is in this spirit that they are now partnering with The Royal Fam Kings, a young and dynamic dance group born and bred on the Cape Flats, with 17 members ranging from age 12 to 30.  The group performs an emerging  street dance called Krump, characterised by free, expressive and highly energetic movements.

Not only does Krump give young people a creative avenue to express themselves, it is also seen as a way to escape gang life on the Flats and elsewhere, and to release aggression, anger and frustration in a non-violent way.  This ties into both Converse’s mission to give back to the community and provide tools and opportunities for creative discovery, and the Royal Fam Kings mission to intentionally transform the mindsets of young people and uphold the standards of dance with effectiveness, integrity and pride.

 The Royal Fam Kings host regular, free platforms for emerging dancers to hone their skills.  The original creator of Krump, dancer Tight Eyez from Los Angeles, and his Lil Homie Kid Eyez from Germany, have just travelled to South Africa for the first time, to spend time krumping with The Royal Fam Kings and to host a dynamic workshop with the local group in Cape Town.

Converse is sponsoring the competitions The Royal Fam Kings are holding for the duration of 2012.  These will allow the Krump style of dancing to be showcased and will give their current dancers a platform to perform.  Converse will be giving cash prizes to the winners of each event.  Furthermore,  the entrants will be dressed by Converse and Converse is providing t-shirts, footwear, stickers, dog tags and other items as prizes and giveaways.  Converse is also taking care of several aspects of the show productions including lighting, sound, catering, poster printing, equipment hire, videography and photography.

The schedule for the Krump Dance Events is as follows:

• 8 September 12:00-19h00: Kingdon vs. Worldly – Club Fever, Lansdowne
• 15 September 13h00-18h00: Bonteheuvel Street Jam – Bonteheuvel Civic Centre
• 6-8 September: Camp Krump – Princess Vlei Eco Centre, Princess Vlei, Elfindale, Cape Town. The camp will cost R450 p.p.
• 13 October 12:00-19:00: Fam Feuds 6 – Kenwyn Community Hall, Range Road,
• 20 October 13:00-18:00: Mitchell’s Plain Street Jam – Lenteguer, Mitchell’s Plain
• 8 December 19:00-23:00: Grand Champs 2 – Steenberg High Hall, Symphony Avenue, Steenberg
