Karen Zoid and Zolani Mahola for the Fugard Theatre
Karen Zoid and Zolani Mahola come together for two concerts only at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town, on 10 and 11 October 2012.
Zolani Mahola is the renowned lead singer and magnetic front-stage personality of the Grammy winning band Freshlyground. Karen Zoid (SAMA winner for Best Female Artist) has a name that is now the byword for emotionally charged, downright incendiary South African rock music.
Zolani is one of South Africa’s most popular and recognisable singers, but she had acting on her mind when she left Port Elizabeth for the University of Cape Town to study drama, which led to a role on the popular SABC show Tsha Tsha. Since joining the Afro-pop group Freshly-ground in 2002, however, she has become known for her captivating stage presence, the poster girl for a happy, carefree democracy.
Last year she performed in a reading of While We’re Not Apart, a play written especially for her by French writer Eudes Panel.
She has also been experimenting with a side project, Mzfitz, a band that allows her to explore musical territory beyond the confines of Freshlyground’s Afro-pop sound.
Since releasing her first solo album, Poles Apart (2002), Karen Zoid has become such an important part of the home grown scene. She has managed that unusual and frequently tricky feat of balancing popular appeal with critical praise; of securing an audience of both Afrikaans and English speakers; of retaining her individuality in a market known for its desire for sameness. Zoid, whose followers have been called the ‘Zoid Generation’, was named Best Female Artist at the 2008 South African Music Awards. She has shared the stage with international acts like John Mayer, Annie Lennox, Metallica, Simple Plan , Hothouse Flowers, Seal and UB40. ‘Zoid Afrika’ is her latest album.
Karen Zoid and Zolani Mahola will perform for two nights on 10 and 11 October at the Fugard Theatre, and will deliver a double serving of brilliant music in an outstanding collaboration which is not to be missed – Afro rock pop unplugged!
The concerts take place at the Fugard in Caledon Street, District Six, starting at 8pm on both 10 and 11 October, with tickets costing R110 to R140 via Computicket or the Fugard booking office on 0214614554.
