Artscape embraces true African opera

The Artscape Theatre Centre welcomes Alexander McCall Smith’s five star African Opera and its fascinating parallels with the Macbeth story. The programme for the next two weeks includes the prestigious Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, lots of dance, comedy and children’s theatre.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Season ends 16 March 2013 (± 2,75 hrs)

AFTER several successful seasons at the Artscape Theatre Centre and the National Arts Festival, Shakespeare’s best loved comedy comes to an end at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre. Filled with magic, humour, spectacle and romance, this play is perfectly suited to the starlit, sylvan setting of Maynardville. Tickets range from R110 to R160.

So… You Think You Can Love? 6 to 30 March 2013 (± 60 mins)

SONIA Esgueira of the Porra smash hit cult trilogy brings a hilarious new comedy about dating, denial and the never ending quest for love to the Arena. From speed dating, one night stands, to proposing to a gay man. If there’s one thing Esgueira can teach you – it’s that there’s no such thing as too much wine before a first date. “If you’ve ever wished that for once Cupid would shoot you in the ass – then this show’s for you!” Tickets range from R70 to R110.

Showcase of Dance – 20 to 23 March 2013 (± 2 hrs)

JOIN this celebration of dance in all styles at the Theatre. This presentation showcases newly created choreography from top teachers and schools in the Western Cape. There are two different programmes of accessible, entertaining and inspiring dance. Tickets range from R65 to R80.

The Okavango Macbeth – 20 to 30 March 2013 (± 90 mins)

THREE primatologists studying a troop of baboons realise the parallels with the Macbeth story witnessing ferocious havoc-wreaking conflict. Set in the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana, the chamber opera in Rehearsal Room 551 deals with the efforts of an ambitious female baboon, Lady Macbeth, to encourage her husband, Macbeth, to murder the dominant baboon, Duncan. The Tales of Peter Rabbit – 23 March to 6 April 2013 (± 60 mins)

Bovim Ballet’s Private Presley – 27 March to 7 April 2013 (± 1,75 hrs)

THIS ballet presentation at the Theatre follows the gigantic rise of one of Rock ‘n Roll’s greatest legends. Set to some of his biggest hits, Private Presley portrays memorable and key moments from his jam-packed life. Tickets range from R150 to R220.
