While the provocative film ‘Blackfish’ made waves for exposing the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity, ‘The Ghosts In Our Machine’ illuminates the plight of many other animals rescued from and living within the machine of our modern world, from captive foxes to rescued dairy cows.

“Haunting beauty… Ghosts is urging us to rethink our relationship with the animal population — what they owe us, what we owe them.” – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Award-winning filmmaker Liz Marshall directs this visually arresting documentary through the heart and lens of photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur. The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she documents several animal stories in parts of Canada, the USA and in Europe. Each story and photograph is a window into global animal industries: food, fashion, entertainment and biomedical research.

‘The Ghosts In Our Machine’ charts McArthur’s efforts to bring wider attention to a topic that most of humankind strives hard to avoid. Are non-human animals property to be owned and used, or are they sentient beings deserving of rights?

Each screenings will be followed by a facilitated audience discussion:

The screening on Saturday 2 August will be followed by a an audience discussion with Louise van der Merwe, the multi-award winning editor of Animal Voice, Managing Trustee of The Humane Education Trust and South African representative for the international NGO Compassion in World Farming.

The screening on Sunday 3 August will be followed by a an audience discussion with Toni Brockhoven, the media and public liaison person for Beauty Without Cruelty (BWC) who has been actively fighting animal exploitation for a number of years, through various means.

Tickets can be reserved by calling The Labia at 021 424 5927 or bought on Webtickets. We strongly recommended that you reserve tickets to avoid disappointment.
