A FESTIVAL OF AFRICAN STORYTELLING AT THE BAXTER

1 Mar, 2013 - 16 Mar, 2013

It’s so interesting to see how creative works seem to cluster together in batches at particular times. February at the Baxter was characterised by stories about and by men, while March is shaping up to be all about the art of African storytelling.

The Baxter Theatre, much like the rest of UCT, is committed to taking its rightful place as a modern African institution and we’re delighted that this month sees almost all of our entertainment rooted firmly in the continent.

Take a look at some of the highlights of the next four weeks listed below and make sure you regularly visit our website for detailed info

Voices Made Night (1 – 23 March)
Magnet Theatre brings its unique brand of theatricality to the Baxter with the award-winning Voices Made Night, a dramatic interpretation of the work of Mozambican writer Mia Couto that dissects the post-colonial experience in Africa with humour, pathos and empathy. Directed by Mark Fleishman, starring Jennie Reznek and a star-studded cast, it’s must-see theatre. This Saturday we’re offering a 2-for-1 special for this multiple Vita-award winning production, so act fast. Book Here

The 3rd Annual Zabalaza Theatre Festival (2-23 March)
The Zabalaza Festival has rapidly established itself as the premier development/community theatre festival in Southern Africa. With over 30 productions and 200 artists this year, including spoken word, hip hop and opera, the festival under the guidance of curator Thami Mbongo brings remarkable work that would otherwise not be seen into a formal theatre environment. Come and be astonished by the talent around us! Book Here

African Passion (28-31 March)
The African Passion is a brand-new gospel opera, funded by the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund, which is touring South Africa in March/April 2013 to celebrate Easter. With 18 professional performers, 6 musicians and a full community choir, it’s one of the first productions to deal with the Passion of Christ story in an African Gospel style. The opera will be a spectacle set against a state-of-the-art audio-visual backdrop, with excellent lighting and sound. Symphonic Groove (16 March)
Conductor Mike Campbell leads the UCT Symphony Orchestra in a selection of contemporary and jazz classics that showcase the individual and collective skills of UCT’s flagship musical collective. At 20h15 in the Concert Hall. Book Here
