Artscape celebrates humanity with Women’s Festival

The Artscape Theatre Centre celebrates humanity with its annual Women’s Arts Festival. The programme for the next two weeks focuses on education initiatives with two school festivals, drama, children’s theatre, dance, choral work and workshops.

Inhale/Exhale – 1 to 4 August 2012 (± 1 hr)

DON’T miss the emotionally engaging theatre production at the Arena that combines the artistic and technical excellence of the Ikapa Dance Theatre, live music and design. Tickets range from R120 to R200.

Krismis van Map Jacobs – 1 to 3 July 2012

THIS well-known Adam Small drama at the Theatre, set against the backdrop of forced removals, offers a peek into life on the Cape Flats in the early seventies. After seven year in prison, feared gang leader, Map Jacobs, is eligible for parole and the question on everybody’s lips is whether Map has changed or not. Tickets cost R70.

Insight into Peter Pan and Raymonda – 2 August 2012 (± 2 hrs)

CAPE Town City Ballet offers dance lovers the opportunity to gain an insight into the production and staging of their brand new creation, Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, as well as their recreation of the full-length ballet, Raymonda at the Opera House. Tickets cost R30.

Arise O Man Male Chorus Concert Tour – 4 August 2012 (± 2,5 hrs)

ENJOY an uplifting evening of music at the Opera House where 250 men sing authentic African traditional forms and American gospel and hymns, drawn from the classics to a modern repertoire. Peter Pan and the Lost Boys – 8 to 12 August 2012 (± 1,75 hrs)

THE Cape Town City Ballet dancers skilfully tell the story of Peter Pan at the Opera House, a mischievous boy who can fly and who never ages. Created by Scottish novelist and playwright, JM Barrie, Peter Pan spends his everlasting childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang, the Lost Boys. They interact with mermaids, fairies, pirates, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside of Neverland. Tickets range from R90 to R150.

High School Drama Festival – 13 to 18 August 2012 (± 2 hrs)

ANNUALLY around 60 schools enter for this festival that gives learners an opportunity to create and present an original drama on a professional stage. Out of all the entries, 15 schools were selected to participate in the main festival at the Arena. This year’s theme is Living Values/Lewenswaardes/Impawu Zentsulungeko Zokuphila Koluntu. Tickets cost R40 for the elimination rounds. The award ceremony is by invitation only.

School Arts Festival– 13 to 30 August 2012 (± 2 hrs)

THIS popular annual festival at the Theatre has grown in stature and is probably the largest of its kind in South Africa. This colourful array of music, dance, song and poetry at the Theatre instils a love of theatre and performing, whilst imparting a sense of pride, achievement and self-esteem to learners. Kipper and the Rainbow – 13 to 31 August 2012 (± 1 hr)

KIPPER is back at the Theatre to save the day! The future of the Rainbow is endangered by the horrible Merdes. Merdes hates colour and beauty and wants to destroy the rainbow recipe. Kipper and his friends need everybody’s help to save the world from being a dull and boring place. Don’t miss this colourful, fast moving, fun filled production. Eric Miller Photographic Exhibition

‘The Nevergiveups’ – 1 to 31 August 2011

ACCLAIMED photographer Eric Miller celebrates the lives of a group of extraordinary grandmothers in a photographic exhibition in the Marble Foyer. ‘The Nevergiveups’ highlights the crucial role that grandmothers are playing in holding together communities across South Africa.

BAHI Healing Concert  5 August 2012 (± 2 hrs)

AN inspiring concert at the Opera House, featuring local musicians, to raise funds for the Borrowed Angels Healing Initiative (BAHI) that provides support to parents who have lost a child through stillbirth or other forms of pregnancy loss. Tickets cost R60.

Pink Drive – 8 to 11 August 2012 (± 1,25 hrs)

THIS tangible breast cancer initiative powers a mobile mammography en educational unit in South Africa. This year they offer on-site mammography tests, educational talks and clinical exams at various Artscape venues.

I Stand Corrected – 8 to 11 August 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

THIS piece of physical theatre in the Arena is an artistic response to homophobia and transphobia, hate rapes and murders. Commissioned by Artscape, this presentation is the first collaboration between highly acclaimed international artists Mojisola Adebayo and Mamela Nyamza. Tickets cost R70.

Gender Equality Discussion Panel9 August 2012 (± 2 hrs)

THIS workshop for girls at the Opera Bar explores sound and responsible answers to questions about sex, drugs, peer pressure and socio-economic challenges. Entrance is free.
