Artscape celebrates women and humanity

Artscape celebrates Women’s Month with its seventh Women/Humanity Arts Festival, consisting of plays, concerts, workshops, and discussion forums. The programme for the next two weeks includes three different schools arts festivals.

Jersey Boys – until 4 August 2013 (± 2,5 hrs)

DON’T miss this remarkable story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons at the Opera House. The Artscape run must end by 4  August 2013. This Broadway musical is about the real-life story of how four poverty-line kids from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the greatest successes in pop music history. Tickets range from R100 to R390.

Shakespeare Schools Festival – 29 July to 1 August 2013 (± 2,5 hrs)

THIS exciting festival from the United Kingdom encourages schools to perform abridged (30 minute) versions of Shakespearean plays at the Theatre. Tickets cost R50.

Dance for All – 3 August 2013 (± 2 hrs)

THIS year’s Dance for All Specialised Dance Programme at the Theatre features two new works by former Royal Ballet soloist Brian Bertscher, called Fantasy Waltzes and Two Gymnopedies. This show that will leave you energised, enchanted, exhilarated, and wanting more. Tickets range from R80 to R120.

Women’s/Humanity Arts Festival – 4 to 10 August 2013

THE theme title of the 7th Artscape Women’s/Humanitarian Arts Festival is Against All Odds, focusing on women and societal challenges and disability. The festival was borne out of the need to honour and give a platform to the countless women who have made it their lifelong goal and ambition to achieve a society where women are acknowledged and treated with the respect they deserve.

Belles of the Ballet – 9 August 2013 (± 60 min)

CAPE Town City Ballet presents a programme devoted to the ballerinas of the dance world to honour Women’s Day at the Opera House. Tickets range from R50 to R110.

Sleeping Beauty – 10 to 18 August 2013 (± 3 hrs)

High School Drama Festival – 12 to 17 August 2013 (± 2 hrs)

HIGH school learners have created original plays around a central theme. A total of 14 plays have been selected for this festival at the Arena. Tickets cost R40. The Awards Ceremony and showcase of the Best Productions take place on Saturday 17 August 2013 and is for invited guests only.

BAHI Concert4 August 2013 (± 2 hrs)

Nianell, Zanne Stapelberg, Louis Britz, Ivan Siegelaar, Rouchelle Liedermann, Elton Jansen and Piper James are the curtain raisers for the Borrowed Angels Healing Initiatives (BAHI) Healing Concert in the Theatre where artists tell their stories of hope and bring healing with inspiring songs accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO). Tickets cost R100.

Shona Quip from 7 August 2012

Shona Quip will install statement art in the Marble Foyer using a wide range of wheelchairs to highlight the need for a wheelchair to be appropriate to each individual user’s need. The overall statement is to raise awareness of the importance of access to support services for people with disabilities.

Nancy – 7 to 10 August 2013 (± 1, 5 hrs)

Abduraghmaan Adams directs this play at the Arena that comments on the South African/universal gay experience. It raises themes such as friendship, homophobia, hate crimes, HIV and Aids through the lives of the three central characters. With Riaan Visman, Peter Treurnicht, Jill Levenberg, Brian Robson, Isgak Stemmet and Eddie Newman. Tickets cost R60.

This original play by Jared Kruger at the Theatre is a coming of age story of two sisters and while one has cerebral palsy, it is by no means a sad or sentimental story. The show offers lots of entertainment. With Bo Petersen, Danieyella Rodin, Madele Vermaak and Jacques de Silva. Tickets cost R80.

It’s a Man’s World – 8 to 10 August 2013 (± 60 min)

Focusing on macho culture and the role African men play in the spread of HIV, the play at the Arena tells the story of four brothers struggling with issues of power, violence, anger, frustration, bitterness and emptiness following the death of their mother. This stage production is a fairy-tale look at the reality of society and the role of men today. Directed by Jerry Pooe. Tickets cost R60.

Panel Discussion – Against All Odds 9 August (± 1,5 hrs)

Dr Marlene Wasserman aka Dr Eve will lead this discussion at the Theatre, focusing on violence against women, the sobering facts about rape and how women survive and celebrate their lives. National icon and world famous satirist, Evita Bezuidenhout, will be the keynote speaker. Entrance is free.

Weigh Less Talk9 & 10 August 2013 (± 60 min)

Founder of the 38-years-old Weighless movement, Mary Holroyd partners with Artscape to deliver two informative talks on healthy living and slimming in the Theatre Foyer. Entrance is free.

Women’s Writers Book Launch – 10 August 2013

Singer Nedine Blom introduces four leading Afrikaans women’s writers, Jeanne Els, Jacqueline Leuvennink, Karin Brynard and Wilna Adriaanse, and their latest books in the Theatre Foyer. Entrance is free.

Nianell & Vicky Sampson in Concert10 August 2013 (± 1,5 hrs)

The 2013 Women/Humanity Arts Festival ends on a high note at the Theatre with two dazzling local stars, Nianell and Vicky Sampson. Also featuring The Chaeli Dancers with Michaela Mycroft, Gladys Bullock’s wheelchair dancers, Charne Hugo, Andile Vellem and Nola Matinise. Tickets cost R100.
