Artscape makes history with Afrikaans oratorio

The Artscape Theatre Centre reaches a new milestone by presenting the first fully fledged oratorio in Afrikaans. The programme for the next two weeks includes heaps of comedy, youthful classical music, community theatre and contemporary dance.

Doctor Doctor – 27 & 28 August 2013 (± 70 min)

IF laughter is the best medicine, admit yourself to the ‘intensive care’ of the GPs of Comedy in a show where ‘Scrubs’ meets ‘Monty Python’. A collection of zany sketches at the Arena, offering a humorous glimpse into the lighter side of the medical profession. Tickets cost R69.

Butlers and Billionaires – 29 & 31 August 2013 (± 70 min)

BACK by popular demand! When a wealthy playboy is found dead, all evidence seems to point to his eccentric butler. An edge-of-your-seat, exhilarating ride at the Arena, with suspicious characters, outrageous antics and twisting plots right up to the final scene! Tickets range from R59 to R79.

Die Skepping Oratorium 31 August & 1 September 2013 (± 80 min)

HISTORY in the making! The first fully fledged original Afrikaans oratorio with classical orchestra, choir and soloists – a celebration of The Creation – comes this weekend to the Opera House. Janine Neethling composed the music to Deon Opperman’s text. Acclaimed soloists Magdalene Minnaar, Barend van der Westhuizen, Minette du Toit-Pearce and Cobus Venter sing the oratorio in seven movements and are supported by the world renowned Akustika choir and a full orchestra, the Johannesburg Music Initiative. Tickets range from R245 to R345.

Western Cape Youth Music Festival – 31 August 2013 (± 2,5 hrs)

ARTSCAPE and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra proudly present the 42nd Youth Music Festival at the Theatre, featuring 13 emerging young classical musicians from of the Western Cape. Tickets cost R80.

Waiting for Rain – 6 to 15 September 2013 (± 90 min)

JAZZART celebrates its 40th anniversary. This presentation at the Theatre is premised on the symbolism of rain as something that signals rebirth, new life and a release of artistic and emotional energy. The dancers perform to a combination of evocative and soulful live and recorded music composed by Tandile Mandela and Mthwakazi. Tickets cost R100.
