Artscape teams up in unique rehabilitation project

Artscape has teamed up with the Pollsmoor Correctional Services facility in Tokai and the Norwegian government in a pilot rehabilitation project of inmates. The programme for the next two weeks includes a musical, two plays, contemporary dance and opera.

Waiting for Rain – 6 to 15 September 2013 (± 90 min)

JAZZART celebrates its 40th anniversary with this presentation at the Theatre. It is premised on the symbolism of rain as something that signals rebirth, new life and a release of artistic and emotional energy. The dancers perform to a combination of evocative and soulful live and recorded music composed by Tandile Mandela and Mthwakazi. Tickets cost R100.

Help I Am Free12 to 14 September 2013 (± 60 min)

INMATES from the Pollsmoor Correctional Services facility in Tokai are to perform their first main presentation on a professional theatre stage. The story is about the process of their involvement in a theatre rehabilitation programme. This presentation is a pilot rehabilitation programme, using theatre as an empowerment tool. Entrance is free.

Freedom’s Child Album Launch – 18 September 2013 (± 2 hrs)

MELANIE Scholtz, Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2010, used the words of iconic South African poet, James Matthews for a new album called Freedom’s Child. The album was written over two years and was recorded in 2011 and is now being launched at the Arena. The album highlights and documents South Africa’s history through the words of James Matthews and the compositions of Melanie Scholtz. Madama Butterfly – 19 to 27 September 2013 (± 2,75 hrs)

CAPE Town Opera triumphantly revives its 2009 production of this popular presentation at the Opera House. East and West collide with tragic results in Puccini’s devastating opera about a trusting young Japanese bride and the callous American naval officer who weds her and then abandons her. Tickets range from R125 to R350.

In Blood 19 to 21 September 2013 (± 2 hrs)

THIS vibrant two-act musical at the Theatre demonstrates the courage of Dude, a blind village girl who grows up in a household with an abusive HIV-positive stepfather. With all the odds against her (being blind and HIV positive) she finds love, gets married, graduates and becomes a legal advisor for a large company. Tickets range from R100 to R140.

The Last Ride – 20 & 21 September 2013 (± 60 min)

WRITTEN and directed by Thando Baliso, this play at the Arena explores the theme of identity, morals and culture through the life of a young boy who is raised by his grandfather who believes in truth, honour and dignity. Tickets cost R50.
