Artscape gets full house for 7th music competition

Artscape has for the first time attracted contestants in all four categories in its flagship National Youth Music Competition. In another first it will also stage the first Afrikaans musical based on the Boer War. The programme for the next two weeks includes opera, ballet, drama, youth theatre and a commemorative exhibition.

Madama Butterfly – 19 to 27 September 2013 (± 2,75 hrs)

CAPE Town Opera triumphantly revives its 2009 production of this popular presentation at the Opera House. East and West collide with tragic results in Puccini’s devastating opera about a trusting young Japanese bride and the callous American naval officer who weds her and then abandons her. Tickets range from R125 to R350.

Die Vallende Maan – 25 to 28 September 2013 (± 60 min)

THIS Afrikaans play at the Arena is a compelling, adventurous romp through the Karoo with a delightful team of three misfits, trying to find their way in the world. It is an interactive play about the strength of diversity, and involves the audience from the outset, requiring them to facilitate the storytelling. Tickets cost R50.

Pas de Deux – 26 to 28 September 2013 (± 90 min)

CAPE Town City Ballet presents a programme highlighting the greatest ‘pas de deux’ of classical ballets at the Theatre. It is a celebration of the much anticipated moment when ballerina and danseur unite in a beautiful and effortless display of grace and supreme technique. The programme will feature some of the most popular dances for two soloists from Anna Karenina, Le Corsaire, The Merry Widow, Scheherazade and Spartacus. Tickets range from R50 to R150.

Artscape National Youth Music Competition1 to 5 October 2013

THE Artscape National Youth Music Competition is striking a royal flush this year with contestants participating in all four categories of the contest for the first time since its inception in 2007. Twenty four young classical musicians between the ages of 14 and 19 years vie over four rounds for the coveted national title at the Theatre. They perform in the final round with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Performers include pianists and soloists on a wide range of orchestral instruments. Entrance to all the elimination rounds is free. Tickets for the gala concert cost R100.

Jazzart 40th Anniversary Exhibition 3 to 27 October 2013

THIS year the Jazzart Dance Theatre celebrates its 40th anniversary. Jazzart’s story unfolds in this moving exhibition in the Marble Foyer, depicting the highlights of this vibrant contemporary dance company.

The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore – 5 to 20 October 2013 (± 2,5 hrs)

DESCRIBED as an allegory and a ‘sophisticated fairy tale’, this Tennessee Williams play at the Arena takes a look at the final two days in the life of ageing beauty, Flora “Sissy” Goforth, the much-married, now-widowed millionaires. A Mediterranean summer disturbingly interrupted by the appearance of a handsome young poet, known to play companion to wealthy old women as they near death. Tickets range from R70 to R120.

Ons Vir Jou 5 to 20 October 2013 (± 2,5 hrs)

THE battlefields of the rag-tag guerrilla army of Boer soldiers fought desperately against the might of the British forces are recreated on the Opera House stage in a first Boer War musical in a style reminiscent of Les Miserables. Tickets range from R150 to R330.
