Artscape promotes local artists

The Artscape Theatre Centre promote South African work with the staging of a series of indigenous works. The programme for the next two weeks includes two internationally acclaimed musical shows, a brand new local drama and one of South Africa’s most popular stand up comedians.

Songs of Migration – 7 to 11 November 2012 (± 1,5 hrs)

THIS cleverly designed show at the Artscape Opera House is filled with raw emotion, joyful exuberance and passionate storytelling. Created by the legendary trumpeter and composer, Hugh Masekela, this musical tribute is inspired by the great trek from the village to the city, from traditional, communal and ancestral lands to the townships and the cities. Featuring songs by the likes of Joseph Shabalala, Dorothy Masuka, Miriam Makeba and Masekela himself, among many others. Tickets range from R100 to R290.

Torchbearers – 8 to 10 November 2012 (± 2 hrs)

AFTER making its international debut at the Wales Cultural Olympiad, this piece of musical theatre now comes to the Artscape Theatre. It revolves around a story of a young Welsh boy and a Zulu girl against the apartheid background. This cross-cultural performance weaves drama, music, circus and dance into a colourful stage display. Tickets cost R60.

Special Thanks to Guests from Afar – 10 to 24 November 2012 (± 80 min)

TWO South African friends who haven’t seen each other in years are reunited at a wedding in a small resort town on the Baltic coast in the former East Germany. The play is for anyone who has ever felt like an extra-terrestrial on the edge of a wedding. Tickets range from R50 to R85.

Casper de Vries: Vark in Hel – 15 to 24 November 2012 (± 2 hrs)

CASPER de Vries and his razor sharp satire returns to the Artscape Opera House. In this show he sends up everything under (and above) the sun. No holy cow escapes his tongue. The discussion ranges from public scandals to aunties with ‘cauliflower’ hair dos. The show with an array of audio visual elements stimulates the senses. Tickets range from R150 to R240.
