CELEBRATING THE MAGIC OF AFRICAN DANCE AT THE V&A WATERFRONT Celebration of Dance – 3

18 Nov, 2012

The energy and rhythm of Africa will greet visitors to the outdoor Amphitheatre at the V&A Waterfront on Sunday, 18 November when the dancers from the Likhwezi Arts Project perform at the Celebration of Dance.

The professional Likhwezi dancers hail from Gugulethu, Nyanga and Khayelitsha townships, and perform traditional dance routines from a number of South African cultures.  They present the poetry and passion of African dance coupled with colourful outfits and the deep rhythmic sound of drums, marimbas, percussion and voices, all set against the backdrop of Table Mountain.

The Likhwezi Arts Project was established in 2003 by Pamela Mtati as a professional, self-sustaining group serving historically disadvantaged communities.  Through building and showcasing the talent of township children, Likhwezi hones their talents and opens opportunities for them in the performing arts field.

From the beginning of November the V&A Waterfront geared up for the coming festive season, starting with the weekly Celebration of Dance which has showcased various dance styles.  The Amphitheatre offers a regular platform to musicians, dancers, comedians and theatre productions and, from December, visitors can expect a wide variety of free entertainment ranging from sunset concerts to children’s entertainment.

Likhwezi will perform between 18h00 and 19h00 and the show is free
