KAT AND THE KINGS CELEBRATES 250TH PERFORMANCE

20 Mar, 2013

Kat and the Kings celebrates 250th performance!

After scooping a total of 12 nominations for the Fleur du Cap and Naledi theatre awards, David Kramer and Taliep Petersen’s Kat & the Kings, currently playing at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town, will celebrate its 250th performance on the 20th March  2013.

The production opened in the Mother City in May last year to outstanding reviews across the board. With the public demand for tickets being so high, the Fugard Theatre revival of Kat and the Kings has had to extend six times and the show has also been presented to great acclaim in Johannesburg at Pieter Toerien’s Theatre at Montecasino.  The show is an upbeat, high energy South African musical with a dynamic cast which includes Dean Balie as Young Kat Diamond, veteran actor Danny Butler as Old Kat Diamond, Amy Trout as lucy, Zak Toerien as Magoo, Grant Peres as Bingo and Carlo Daniels as Ballie. The action is accompanied every night with a full, live onstage band.

Kat & the Kings, directed by David Kramer and dedicated to the late Taliep Petersen, is set in District Six in the late 1950s and explores the journey of teenager Kat Diamond and his a cappella group, The Cavalla Kings. After touring South Africa in 1996, the original production of Kat & the Kings played on the West End in London and On Broadway in New York, winning two prestigious Olivier Awards – the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and the entire cast won the award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1999. Kat & the Kings was also nominated for a Tony, a Drama League and 3 Drama Desk Awards.

To celebrate the 250th show which takes place on the 20th March at 8pm, the Fugard Theatre is offering patrons tickets at R250 per couple which will include a complimentary DVD of David Kramer’s hit show, The Kramer Petersen Songbook and a bottle of limited edition Fugard Theatre Rose`.  Regular tickets cost R90 to R160 via Computicket or the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554. There are excellent specials on Thursdays (Two tickets for R220 which includes a complimentary refreshment on arrival) and Saturdays (Family of Four: Four tickets for R400).   The production ends on 23 March 2013 and advance booking is recommended.
