Artscape in association with UCT Drama and National Arts Festival is proud to present Howard Barker’s, Slowly, directed by Geoffrey Hyland.
Slowly tells the story of four princesses deciding how to act as they await the invading barbarians that have come to finally destroy their dying civilisation. In a culture of conformity, it may not be up to the individual to decide ….the question is, is there dignity in suicide? Does a struggle to survive demean us? And who is ‘the barbarian’?
English playwright, Howard Barker, is one of the most significant and controversial dramatists of our time. His plays challenge, unsettle and expose. The work is infused with a desire to test the communal rules that we adhere to. By searching for a transcendental experience that reaches out to the most primal parts of us all, his work engages with the audience at a different kind of level, a level beneath the social and political.
Slowly, premiered at the 2014 National Arts Festival and Kyle Hazell, a Cue reporter wrote: “Lose yourself in Slowly, a production by director Geoffrey Hyland which masterfully explores the process of disappearing as imagines by British playwright Howard Barker. Aesthetically exceptional and powerfully portrayed. Slowly forces us to ask what we would do in the face of our own demise. A slow and certain seduction.”
The roles of the four princesses are portrayed by Jennifer Steyn (Sign), Chi Mhende (Calf), Gahlia Phillips (Bell) and Faniswa Yisa (Paper).
