SOUTH AFRICAN DIVA’S TO PERFORM AT THE V&A WATERFRONT

1 Dec, 2012 - 2 Dec, 2012

Date: Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December
Time: 18h00 to 19h00
Venue: V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre
Cost: Free

Celebrate music at the V&A Waterfront with popular songstresses Melanie Scholtz and Vicky Sampson when they perform live at the outdoor Amphitheatre on Saturday, 1 December and Sunday 2 December respectively.

The free performances continue the V&A Waterfront’s celebration of local culture which was kick-started with the Celebration of Dance in November, and continues through to the end of January with various themes.

Melanie Scholtz and the Love Apples

Melanie Scholtz and her band, the Love Apples will perform original music which has won them fans at home and abroad where they regularly perform.  Melanie, an accomplished singer, composer, songwriter and music director, graduated Cum Laude in 2000 from UCT’s SA College of Music with a Performer’s Diploma in Opera.  In 2002 she was voted Best Jazz Vocalist in the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters and in 2010 she won the Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz award.

The Love Apples consist of Andrew Lilley on piano, Charles Lazar on double bass, Jonno Sweetman on drums, Gorm Helfjord on guitar and Norwegian trumpeter Ole Jorn Myklebust, who also produced the band’s 2010 album ‘Connected’.

Vicky Sampson

Few people can claim to be unmoved when hearing Vicky Sampson’s astonishing voice reach higher and higher in her ultimate African anthem ‘my African Dream’, which she will perform under African skies at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre on Sunday, 2nd December.

The young Vicky, who grew up in District Six, Bishop Lavis and Hanover Park, would sing along to songs she played on a little red toy piano,  until 1982 when she won a talent contest called ‘Follow that Star’ when her incredible vocal range catapulted her to fame.  She has since gone on to produce three albums.

The award-winning, feted and celebrated performer has appeared on many international stages alongside many international greats.  Over the years her ‘African Dream’ has also led her to fill the roles of political activist, humanitarian and a proud South African.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see two of Cape Town’s finest singers perform live.  The hourly shows start at 18h00 and travelling to the V&A is now as easy as hopping on a My Citi bus! As of 1 December, the route now also includes a direct link to the Cape Town International Airport.
