Summer Sunset Concerts at the Water’s Edge

Long established and a firm favourite with locals and visitors to Cape Town, the line-up for the V&A Waterfront Free Summer Sunset Concerts has been announced. Taking place on the outdoor Amphitheatre during the month of December, these acoustic performances featuring well-known names offer great views, great music and the perfect way to spend a summer’s evening on the water’s edge.  Each performance takes place at a different time so keep an eye on www.waterfront.co.za for a full schedule.

TouchWood

Date: Saturday 14th December 2013

Time: 18h00 – 18h40

TouchWood is one of Cape Town’s up and coming bands. Their unique gypsy-folk music style includes the guitar, ukulele, violin, African Marimba, and drums. Their influences of Neil Young and  Janis Joplin combined with new contemporary sounds makes this band a refreshing, upbeat experience. They have just released their first EP ‘Land in the Sun’ and returned from their first highly successful European tour.

Paige Mac Band

Paige Mac’s sound could be described as acoustic soul with a folk rock edge. However you chose to describe it, her music appeals to people with diverse range of music tastes. This performance is sure to have something for everyone.

Gerald Clark

Date: Sunday 15th December 2013

Gerald Clark has been the frontman, songwriter and driving force behind the blues group, Deltablue since 1999. His solo career has taken off since his debut in 2006 and has broken into the Afrikaans market, sticking to his original style of acoustic blues and love songs with a spice of Folk. His solo album, Sweepslag, had 5 nominations at the Tempo and Vonk awards.

CH2

CH2 are a double SAMA-winning classical guitar duo. With their well balanced blend of Classical, Spanish, Latin, Jazz, and some Instrumental Pop, the new CH2 sound is sure to shift boundaries and give a memorable performance. Their album “CH2 Live with the University of Pretoria symphony orchestra” has been released and consists of an epic orchestral arrangement woven into the compositions of CH2, creating a sound and style that is unique to this award-winning duo.

Sheraaz

Sheraaz is an instrumental world fusion band. The band’s shows can be described as an exhilarating experience. The multi-instrumental band will have you wanting more as they take you on a journey through the musical landscapes of the world. Sheraaz plays music influenced by many countries such as Ireland, Spain, the Middle East, America, Africa and more.

Elvis Blue

Date: Tuesday 17th December

Elvis Blue’s journey started when he was a young boy singing in school choirs and busking in the streets of Joburg and Scotland. His one and only goal was to make and perform music. In 2010, Elvis Blue won the title of the hugely successful MNet Idol. Since then, he has released an album that has changed his life and has been the culmination of all his years of hard work. Simply titled Elvis Blue, and released in November 2010 the album shot up the radio and sales charts and reached Gold status. In April 2012, Elvis’ credibility and talent was further acknowledged when he took home the SAMA (South African Music Award) for Best Adult Contemporary Album for the double disc special edition of his self-titled album.

Omega Brass Ensemble

The Omega Brass Ensemble was established in September 2004 as a voluntary non-profit organisation with a mission to combat crime and violence in their area. Since the establishment, OBE has been in the forefront in development of its youth and community. OBE seeks to empower the youth with the correct tools through counselling and music, so that they can go back into society to rebuild and make positive contributions to the success for their own people.

The Salvation Army Band and Choir

Date: Wednesday 18th December 2013

Time: 18h50 – 19h30

The Salvation Army Brass Band has a vibrant musical tradition. Many well-known musicians have started their careers as members, including High Masekela, Professor Mzilikazi Khumalo and the director of the South African Naval Band, Commander Kenny Liebbrandt. The Salvation Army uses their musicians to reach out to fellow young South Africans and help face community challenges such as drug addiction and poverty.

Gugulethu Tenors

Described as South Africa’s Il Divo, the Gugulethu Tenors enchant the concert halls of South Africa with their inherent love of Opera and performance. By incorporating contemporary and subtle ethnic elements into the traditional Opera idiom, they have made the genre their own, capturing the hearts of audiences across South Africa with their raw talent. Their repertoire includes operatic favourites such as O Sole Mio, Nessun Dorma and Nella Fantasia.

Cape Town Gospel Choir

Date: Thursday 19th December 2013

Founded in 2010, the Cape Town Gospel Choir promotes unity in the city with a strong focus on social responsibility and unity across racial, ethnic and economic barriers. Directed by Colin Peckham, the choir has performed across the Mother City since it started, drawing in members from many different communities and ages. The Choir is a ministry of Origin South Africa, an NPO based in Cape Town that was founded in 2005, and has appeared right here at the V&A Waterfront many times over the years accompanied by their house band.

Apostle Choristers

Date: Thursday 19th December 2013

The Apostle Choristers was established in 1995 to enhance choral music within our community. The choir is managed by the Ithemba Cultural Society, and musically directed by Camillo Lombard. The choir is divided into 3 regions: Cape Metropole, Boland and Swartland.

Carol’s by Candlelight

Date: Friday 20th December 2013

Time: 20h00 – 21h00

Carols by Candlelight at the V&A Waterfront promises to be a magical night full of fun and Christmas cheer for the whole family. With an awesome vocal group, live band, a fully scripted and performed Nativity Scene and ending off with a rousing rock-n-roll style medley, sung by Santa Clause himself. The performance will also include well known hymns, carols and Christmas songs perfect for young and old to get into the Christmas spirit.
