The V&A Waterfront celebrates its’ commitment to the Earth

Show your commitment to preserving resources and celebrate Earth Hour at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday 29 March. Currently in its seventh year, people all over the world switch off their lights for one hour to raise awareness for our planet. As the world’s largest environmental awareness initiative, Earth Hour brings together cities all over the world as they switch off their lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm, symbolising their commitment to the Earth. This year, the V&A Waterfront in conjunction with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the City of Cape Town, will host an evening of education, awareness and entertainment. The outdoor Amphitheatre will showcase screenings of documentaries from early evening on Saturday. Learn more about the earth and about ways in which you can contribute to sustaining it.
From 8:30pm sharp, all non-essential lights at the V&A Waterfront will be turned off and the audience will enjoy a candlelight performance by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Cape Town’s finest classical musicians will entertain the crowd with their renditions of popular classics. The evening’s entertainment will end off with a 3D projection show like no other.
Since 2008, the V&A Waterfront has invested over R25 million into energy efficiency, water savings and waste management. Just last year, the Waterfront saved over 85 000 litres of water, which is enough to fill a new penguin enclosure. In addition to that, 11 261 449 kWh in electricity was saved in the same year, that’s enough power to run the whole V&A Waterfront property for two months – or the entire city of Cape Town for a day. The concert is free and is a great way for the family to spend a night out, but visitors are advised to arrive early to ensure they secure the best seats.
